Membership Fees
All registered cooperatives in Kenya are automatically members of the Cooperative Alliance of Kenya (CAK). Membership comes with a mandatory contribution in accordance with the Gazette Notice of 2013, which allows cooperatives to pay CAK a fee of Ksh. 25 per active member based on the number of active members reported in the last audited account.
1. Purpose of Membership Fees
Membership fees support CAK in fulfilling its mandate to advocate for the cooperative sector, engage in lobbying initiatives, and provide resources and capacity-building programs to member cooperatives. Specifically, fees are used for:
- Policy advocacy and lobbying at national and county levels
- Research, policy briefs, and sector updates
- Networking and collaboration opportunities among cooperatives and stakeholders
- Operational costs for coordinating cooperative sector initiatives
2. Fee Calculation
The annual membership fee is calculated at Ksh. 25 per active member, based on the number of active members reported in the cooperative’s last audited account. This ensures that the fee is proportional to the size of the cooperative and fairly contributes to the collective strength of the sector.
3. Payment Process
Fees are payable through CAK-approved channels. Payment receipts are issued to confirm the transaction, and cooperatives in good standing retain full active membership status, including the right to participate in advocacy, policy consultations, and sectoral initiatives.
4. Benefits of Paying Fees
- Full participation in CAK-led policy advocacy and lobbying
- Access to sector research, policy updates, and capacity-building programs
- Representation in national and county cooperative forums
- Recognition as an active contributor to the growth and development of the cooperative sector
Summary
Membership fees, calculated according to the Gazette Notice of 2013, ensure that CAK can continue to represent, advocate for, and strengthen the cooperative sector. All registered cooperatives are required to pay their fees and actively participate in sector initiatives.
