Nairobi, Kenya – Following a comprehensive midterm review of the Farmers’ Organization for Africa Climate Project (FO4ACP), teams from the Co-operative Alliance of Kenya (CAK) and the Eastern Africa Farmers Federation (EAFF) gathered outside CAK’s Nairobi offices to mark the conclusion of the review meeting. The outdoor photo captured the spirit of partnership and shared commitment to advancing climate-smart agriculture and farmer organization development across the region. The FO4ACP project, funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), aims to strengthen farmer organizations across Eastern Africa, equipping them with the tools, knowledge, and capacity to adapt to climate change, improve productivity, and enhance rural livelihoods. The midterm review provided a platform to evaluate progress, share lessons learned, and chart the course for the next phase of implementation. During the meeting, CAK CEO Daniel Marube highlighted the importance of building resilient farmer organizations that can respond effectively to climate challenges. “Our goal is not only to support farmers in increasing yields, but also to ensure that their organizations are well-governed, inclusive, and capable of sustaining interventions long after the project ends,” Marube noted. The FO4ACP project has recorded significant achievements since its inception. Among the notable successes are: These achievements demonstrate how FO4ACP is helping farmers not only survive climate shocks but thrive economically, with benefits that extend beyond the individual farms to entire communities. The midterm review was designed to be participatory, bringing together representatives from CAK, EAFF, and other stakeholders involved in project implementation. The session provided an opportunity to exchange insights, assess challenges, and plan strategically for the remaining duration of the project. Marube emphasized that collaboration is central to achieving sustainable impact. “We are stronger together. By engaging farmer organizations, development partners, and policymakers, we can ensure that the lessons learned are translated into scalable solutions,” he said. The outdoor photo taken after the meeting symbolized this collaborative spirit, showing the project team united and committed to driving climate resilience and sustainable agricultural growth in Eastern Africa. One of the standout elements of FO4ACP is its emphasis on empowering women and youth within farmer organizations. Recognizing that these groups play a crucial role in agriculture, the project has designed targeted interventions to enhance their participation and leadership. “Women and youth are the backbone of farming communities,” Marube noted. “Ensuring their inclusion is not just a matter of equity; it is critical for sustainable agricultural development.” Training programs under the project have focused on leadership, financial management, climate-smart practices, and market engagement, equipping women and youth with the knowledge and confidence to influence decision-making within their organizations. The midterm review also provided an opportunity to reflect on challenges encountered during project implementation. Key issues identified include limited access to finance for smallholder farmers, variable climate conditions affecting crop and livestock production, and the need for stronger market linkages to ensure profitability. Addressing these challenges requires innovative solutions and adaptive approaches. Both CAK and EAFF emphasized the importance of digital tools for market access and information dissemination, enhanced governance within farmer organizations, and advocacy for supportive policies at national and regional levels. Lessons learned so far have reinforced the importance of context-specific strategies, participatory planning, and continuous engagement with all stakeholders to achieve sustainable results. Looking ahead, the FO4ACP project aims to build on its midterm successes to expand impact. Priorities for the remaining project period include: “The midterm review has provided a clear roadmap for the future,” Marube said. “With continued collaboration, innovation, and commitment, FO4ACP will continue to deliver meaningful benefits to farmers, communities, and the broader agricultural sector in Eastern Africa.” The FO4ACP project represents a comprehensive approach to tackling the intertwined challenges of climate change, food security, and rural livelihoods. By focusing on farmer organizations, inclusivity, and sustainable practices, the project is contributing to a resilient agricultural future for the region. The outdoor gathering after the meeting, captured in a photograph, symbolized the spirit of partnership, determination, and hope that drives FO4ACP. It reflects a shared vision of empowering farmers, fostering innovation, and promoting sustainable development across Eastern Africa. As the project progresses toward its next phase, CAK and EAFF remain committed to ensuring that farmers are not only equipped to face the challenges of today but also prepared to seize the opportunities of tomorrow.
