Eligibility Criteria
Membership in the Cooperative Alliance of Kenya (CAK) is automatic for all registered cooperatives in Kenya. To ensure active participation and representation in advocacy and policy initiatives, cooperatives must meet the following eligibility criteria:
1. Registration as a Cooperative
Only cooperatives that are officially registered under the Cooperative Societies Act, 2021 or relevant legislation qualify as members of CAK. Registration must be current and in good standing with the relevant regulatory authorities.
2. Active Compliance
Member cooperatives must comply with national cooperative regulations and operate according to their bylaws and governance structures. This ensures accountability and maintains the integrity of the cooperative sector.
3. Active Participation
All eligible cooperatives are required to actively participate in CAK activities, including:
- Policy consultations and legislative advocacy
- Sectoral forums, workshops, and capacity-building programs
- National and county-level cooperative initiatives
- Providing input and feedback on cooperative policies and sector development strategies
4. Commitment to Cooperative Principles
Membership requires adherence to the core principles of cooperatives, including democratic governance, transparency, accountability, and equitable participation. Cooperatives must actively promote these principles within their own operations and through sectoral engagement.
Summary
In short, any legally registered cooperative in Kenya automatically becomes a member of CAK. Eligibility is tied to legal registration, compliance with regulations, active participation, and commitment to cooperative principles. This ensures that all members contribute meaningfully to advocacy, policy shaping, and the growth of the cooperative sector.
