Nairobi, 28th March – 1st April 2022
The Co-operative Alliance of Kenya (CAK) participated in the Kick-Off Meeting for AIRTEA Third-Party Projects, held from 28th March to 1st April 2022 in Nairobi. The meeting brought together representatives from all project partner institutions, technical teams, and implementing partners across East Africa to prepare for the implementation of AIRTEA’s third-party interventions. These interventions are designed to support rural women and youth in the dairy sector, strengthen multi-stakeholder partnerships, and enhance agricultural innovation uptake.
The five-day meeting was organized by FARA, with support from ASARECA, EAFF, and funding from the European Union through the OACPS programme. It provided a platform to align expectations, clarify roles and responsibilities, and equip participating institutions like CAK with the tools and knowledge necessary for successful project implementation.
AIRTEA Third-Party Projects: Context and Objectives
The AIRTEA Third-Party Projects form part of a broader regional initiative aimed at promoting inclusive agricultural development, particularly in the dairy value chain. By leveraging multi-stakeholder partnerships, the projects focus on empowering rural women and youth to improve livelihoods, enhance food and nutrition security, and increase income opportunities.
CAK’s role as an implementing partner in Kenya is critical, given its extensive experience in supporting dairy cooperatives, facilitating market access, and strengthening farmer capacity. The kick-off meeting provided an opportunity to harmonize approaches, ensure adherence to donor requirements, and reinforce the strategic importance of collaboration across government agencies, cooperatives, private sector actors, and research institutions.
Comprehensive Training for CAK Staff
During the five-day meeting, CAK staff underwent detailed training on various aspects of project management, reporting, procurement, and compliance, ensuring that the organization is fully prepared to deliver on project commitments. Key training areas included:
- Project Reporting: Techniques for timely and accurate reporting to stakeholders, including progress, financial, and activity reports.
- Procurement Management: Guidance on transparent procurement processes, compliance with donor regulations, and proper documentation for goods and services acquisition.
- Financial Management: Budget preparation, cost tracking, and audit readiness to ensure accountability and compliance.
- Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E): Tools and methodologies for tracking project outcomes, measuring performance indicators, and documenting impact.
- Risk Management: Identifying, assessing, and mitigating potential project risks to ensure continuity and sustainability.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Effective communication with beneficiaries, government agencies, private sector partners, and multi-stakeholder platforms.
- Work Planning and Scheduling: Creating realistic timelines, work plans, and activity schedules for smooth project execution.
- Governance and Compliance: Understanding ethical, legal, and contractual obligations in project implementation.
Practical Exercises and Scenario-Based Learning
A key feature of the meeting was the hands-on learning approach. CAK staff participated in scenario-based exercises, simulating real project challenges such as delayed procurement, underreporting, and stakeholder conflicts. Participants learned how to address these challenges proactively and ensure smooth project operations. Role-playing exercises emphasized team coordination, communication skills, and decision-making under pressure, enhancing participants’ ability to manage projects effectively.
Interactive discussions allowed participants to share experiences from other projects, highlighting lessons learned, successes, and challenges. Best practices from past donor-funded agricultural interventions were shared, including approaches for improving milk production, cooperative management, and farmer training programs.
Networking and Collaboration
The kick-off meeting also provided an important opportunity for networking and partnership building. Representatives from different countries and institutions exchanged ideas, explored collaboration opportunities, and identified potential synergies between projects. CAK staff established contacts with technical experts, researchers, and private sector partners, which will enhance knowledge sharing and technical support for dairy farmers in Kenya.
The meeting underscored the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration, where each partner brings unique strengths. Research institutions contribute technical knowledge, cooperatives mobilize farmers, government agencies provide policy support, and private sector actors enable market access. By leveraging these partnerships, AIRTEA Third-Party Projects aim to achieve greater impact and sustainability.
Expected Outcomes for CAK and the Dairy Sector
By the end of the meeting, CAK staff were well-prepared to implement project activities effectively. Expected outcomes include:
- Enhanced project reporting and compliance with donor requirements
- Implementation of transparent procurement and financial management systems
- Strengthened monitoring and evaluation frameworks to track progress and impact
- Effective engagement with stakeholders, farmers, and partners
- Mitigation of project risks and adherence to governance and ethical standards
- Increased capacity to support women and youth in the dairy value chain through cooperative development, training, and market linkages
Reflections from Participants
CAK staff expressed appreciation for the opportunity to strengthen their knowledge and skills.
One participant noted:
"The kick-off meeting was very insightful. It has given us a clear understanding of what is expected
and how to manage our responsibilities effectively. The practical exercises were particularly
helpful in preparing us for real-life challenges on the ground."
Another participant highlighted the importance of collaboration:
"Working alongside colleagues from other institutions has been valuable. We learned from
each other’s experiences, and this will make our work in the dairy sector more coordinated and impactful."
Moving Forward
The kick-off meeting laid a strong foundation for successful implementation of AIRTEA Third-Party Projects. With enhanced capacity in reporting, procurement, M&E, stakeholder engagement, and risk management, CAK is well-positioned to support sustainable dairy development, particularly among rural women and youth in Kenya. The knowledge and skills gained during the meeting will ensure that project interventions are efficient, transparent, and impactful, and that AIRTEA’s objectives of improving livelihoods, food security, and employment opportunities are achieved across the region.
