The co-operative movement in Kenya is a critical sector in the country as it plays a major role in aggregating resources and redistributing the same to power the engine of economic and social development in multiple sectors. The Co-operative movement has impacted individuals and communities given its presence and operation in various sectors of the economy in the endeavor of creating and delivering value in education, hospitality, transport, construction, financial services and agriculture among others. Given its vital importance as a motive force in driving economic activities, it is imperative that there is proper stewardship in the management of its resources.
To ensure that Co-operatives continue to create and deliver substantial impact in Kenya, respective cooperative institutions must put into practice systems and processes that mitigate against risks and that safeguard the interests of the stakeholders and long run sustainability of the institutions. Implementation of robust systems, procedures and processes are key to assuring that cooperatives protect the members’ funds against financial mismanagement and lose.
Key to achieving this is a leadership well prepared and equipped to provide ethical leadership, effective controls and proper oversight on management actions and operations. This calls for a strengthening of governance structures, enforcing accountability measures, and implementing stringent financial oversight through effective supervision and audit.
It is in this regard that the Co-operative Alliance of Kenya (CAK) in partnership with the Institute of Directors Kenya (IODK), is organizing a 4-day forum on “Effective Risk Management and Audit Forum” for co-operative leaders.
